Archvillain #1

Archvillain

By Barry Lyga

192 pages – Ages 9+

Published by Scholastic Paperbacks June 1, 2011

Kyle Camden was a real prankster. In fact, his pranks were pretty much legendary in the town of Bouring and Kyle likes the attention he gets from pulling off pranks. While Kyle is planning his next great prank he is hit by some sort of weird alien plasma. Kyle soon realizes that he is faster, stronger and smarter that any other human! No one will stop his pranks now! There’s only one problem, Mighty Mike. Mighty Mike came out of the plasma and Mighty Mike has super powers. Mighty Mike tries to use his powers to help, but he’s pretty bad at being a hero, but everybody loves Mighty Mike anyway. Kyle thinks Mike is “showing him up” and decides to try to turn everyone against Mike no matter what…dunt dunt daaaaahhhh (cue dramatic music here).

I liked this book especially because I like books with superheroes involved in the story. It was a quick book to read and it was kind of interesting but I thought the characters could have been a little better. I really didn’t like how Kyle just wanted to destroy Mike because he was jealous. I kind of didn’t like Kyle as a main character as much as I would have liked to. I did think there were very funny parts to the book and I did like the story idea. I think the book would be good for young advanced readers looking for a longer story to read. This is the first book in the Archvillain series. The second book called “Archvillain #2 Mad Mask” will be published January 1, 2012 and I am planning on reading that one too. I am hoping Kyle is a bit more likeable in that book. To learn more about Mr. Lyga and his other books, please visit his website by clicking HERE.

I give Archvillain 3 out of 5  book worms.

  1. Good, thoughtful review. Thanks!

  2. Nice review, once again, Erik. My 4-yr-old boy loves superheros, so I’ll have to keep my eyes open for more of your recommendations. My daughter loves stories about horses, so I’ll look for your thoughts on that topic too.

    • Thanks a lot Mr. Ansbro! I’ll review the book “Superhero ABC’s” By Bob Mcleod and my sister has this picture book called “Everybody Needs A Superhero” which even I like! I’ll review them soon. I’ll have to keep an eye out for horse books! 😉
