It’s Groundhog Day and I have “Punxsutawney Phyllis” to Review!

Punxsutawney Phyllis

By Susanna Leonard Hill

Illustrated by Jeffrey Ebbeler

32 pages – ages 5+

Published by Holiday House in 2005

It’s Groundhog Day and Phyllis knows that spring is coming early! Phyllis tries to tell everyone what her prediction is but no one believes her. Phyllis dreams of being THE Punxsutawney groundhog but everyone tells her only boys that are named Phil and are born on Groundhog Day can be THE Punxsutawney groundhog. Phyllis still thinks she is right even when her Uncle Punxsutawney Phil tells her that spring NEVER comes early. Phyllis knows she sees signs of Spring EVERYWHERE and she shows her uncle Phil the chickadees singing, the running spring and tells him to feel the spring zephyr. Punxsutawney Phil realizes that Phyllis was right and he passes his top hat to her making her THE Punxsutawney Phyllis!

I really like how Phyllis proves she’s right even when all the grown-ups think she’s wrong. Phyllis never gives up and I am glad for that! Phyllis is a great character because of her determination and that she believes in herself. I also like how Punxsutawney Phil takes the time to actually listen to Phyllis. It is a great story behind Groundhog Day (I live in Pennsylvania so that’s a pretty big holiday here)! The illustrations are really nice – all the groundhogs are cute 🙂 . I like how Ms. Hill put a section in the back of the book giving the history and some facts about Groundhog Day (like Punxsutawney Phil is only right 37-39% of the time 😉 ).  I recommend the book today and any other day of the year for people who want a book with a nice message about believing in yourself!

Ms. Hill sent me and my sister this book as a prize when I sent her a creative writing thing I did. She said I could have any book I wanted and I asked for one of hers Well, I liked it so much I decided to review it! Thank you Ms. Hill!  🙂

I give Punxsutawney Phyllis five out of five book worms!

  1. Aw, Erik! Thanks for your lovely review! Such a surprise, and you made my day 🙂 Phyllis and I are off to visit a preschool this morning and she will be impossible to keep quiet now that you featured her book on your blog 🙂 Thank you so much!

    • Thank YOU Ms. Hill! I hope Phyllis (and you 🙂 ) had a great Groundhog Day!

      • We did! I hope you did, too! Plus, since you so kindly reviewed the book and said such nice things about Phyllis, I want you to be the first to know that the preschoolers I visited this morning wanted to know what Phyllis’ middle name was. I had never thought about that, so I had to invent one. Henceforth, her full name shall be: Punxsutawney Phyllis Princess Snowy Sunshine Macaroni Hotwheels Groundhog Hill! I will post it on my blog tomorrow, but you are in the know 🙂

      • We had a great Punxsutawney Phyllis Day! HOW COOL! I wish my middle name was HOTWHEELS!!…or maybe macaroni. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be reading your PPBF post tomorrow 🙂
