April is National Poetry Month – I Give You “Fred The Monkey King”

National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry month and there are all sorts of great things going on. You can check out some activities at The Academy of American Poets HERE. Renée LaTulippe over at No Water River has a great poetry series you should check out (click HERE). Tonight for our school’s open house my entire fourth grade class is going to have poetry readings. I will be reading “New York is in North Carolina” by Jack Prelutsky.

Back in February I took a poll  asking if the main character of my 12×12 book should be a boy or girl… or a monkey named Fred. Well, Fred won the poll but Fred really didn’t fit into my book so I went with the second place winner, a boy. Fred was a bit depressed that he didn’t get to be in  my book and a couple of people commented that I should write a story about Fred. I didn’t write a story, but I did write a poem (a limerick actually) to celebrate National Poetry month.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you “Fred the Monkey King”!

The Monkey King whose name was Fred,

Donned a priceless crown upon his head.

His headdress cost so much,

he couldn’t buy any robes and such.

So he just wore his underwear instead.

  1. Brilliant Limerick, Erik! I bet you had fun reading that poem out in school. This month is so fun!

  2. You made me laugh! Nice name for a Monkey King by the way!

  3. Like Penny, you made me laugh with your words and the drawing is so fun.

  4. Great limerick Erik. Have fun at the open house tonight!

  5. Great limerick, Erik. And I love the drawing!

  6. Too funny, Erik! My boys loved that! Especially the pic of the monkey in his undies. 🙂

  7. You made me laugh one of those . . . let’s just say it is a good thing I wasn’t drinking any milk when I read about Fred and then saw is undies. Is that your drawing or your sister’s. She is the artist, right?

Well, how does poor Fred feel now that you have posed him in front of his underlings in his underwear? He does have a great smile and bright eyes.

  8. Okay, I’ve had my chuckle for the day! Fred deserved his day! That was great! Have fun tonight at your school’s poetry program.

  9. Very funny! 🙂 The next Captain Underpants 🙂
