Mallory Gilmartin did NOT want to move to Cedar Creek. She had to because of her parents divorce. She is now living in the Marlatt cottage and weird things are happening at the Marlatt Manor (mansion). Mallory starts having dreams about a girl, Violet, who disappeared at the Manor and other creepy and weird things start to happen. Mallory, her grandmother (who already lives in Cedar Creek) and Mallory’s new friend, Kyle try to figure out the mystery behind the strange things going on and the mystery behind Violet Marlatt. What happens in the Manor? The truth is beyond reality!
I have to say first that I am not a huge fan of scary stories that are just scary to be scary. The Mystery at Marlatt Manor was not just a scary book, it had a great mystery in it also (and I do like mysteries), so I thought this book was a good book. There were some parts that really creeped me out but only because it was spooky, not because it was violent or anything bad. I really liked Kyle in the book. Mallory was a good main character too. I would have liked the dreams Mallory had to be explained a bit more, but I guess that adds to the whole mystery. The plot of the book was very good and it kept you guessing what would happen next. I would really recommend the book to kids who are fans of mysteries. I think it is good for all ages because it was a clean read (other than creepy parts if kids get scared easy).
Check out the trailer – it shows how spooky the book is!
Four out of five bookworms for The Mystery at Marlatt Manor!

Oooh, I am like you, Erik, I am not into scary for scary sake, but love a good mystery. This sounds a great recommendation. The book cover looks a little spooky, huh?
Thats what I did like about the book, the good mystery! The cover (and the trailer) are creepy!
There’s a fine line with scary stories for me – I like some scary, but not too much! 🙂 This sounds like a good read though.
You sound like me! Even some of the RL Stine books a lot of kids like I’m not too fond of (The Horrorland ones are ok). I did like this story though!
Terrific review, Erik. I have a tendency, like you, to stay away from books that are simply scary. I get too scared. So thanks for pointing out that, although the book has scary and creepy parts, it’s really a mystery.
Thank you Mr. Davis! I think you would like it, but it does mention ghosts, but they are trying to figure out what’s going on at the manor where the ghost is. It’s a good mystery! 🙂
Ooooh, this looks too scary for me!
It does have a really good mystery too it also! 🙂
I don’t like scary just to be scary either. I don’t like to watch scary movies either. I do like a good mystery though. This sounds like a book I need to add to my to-read list. Thanks, Erik.
I think you will like it! 🙂
That music is scary enough for me Erik, you are brave!
It is akind of scary but not too much!!
Ooooh, I liked the book and your review. I want to know the mystery. Loved the video. I loved mystery books as a kid. Sounds very different for you, Erik!
Thank you Ms. Tilton! I think you’d really like this book! I like figuring out a good mystery! 🙂 It’s not my usual kind of book, but I am glad I read it!
Good review. I like to avoid scary books, though!
Thanks for visiting my blog Mr. Johnston! It’s really not THAT scary…but just enough 😉
Thank You for letting us know about this book. I am sure there are lots of children who LOVE scary, as well as some of us adults!
It had a great mystery to it too!
Ohhhh scarrrrry! that gate closing at the end took my by surprise…. Like a mystery but not scary. Thanks Erik,(sorry I am a bit late here)
The video make it look terrifying (I don’t think the book was as scary as the trailer shows). I’ve been behind on my comments too 😉
Cool! The book sounds great Eric! I’m not into scary stories to mutch, I’ll have a hard time going to sleep or something. But this book sounds great–i’ll have to check it out some time. I really like mysteries like “The Hardy Boys” and “Nancy Drew”. I watched the trailer and wasn’t to creeped by the music (Although the mansion IS a bit creepy looking….) But when the music had stopped in the end of it and I wasn’t expecting anything….I got scared by the MOST non scary part probably. A door creaked and I jumped. LOL! 😛
It is great Jack! I love the Hardy boys (except the new ones. Those are horrible. I stay to the oldies) I was jumping at everything! HA HA! Creaking doors aren’t that scary in real life, but in books and videos, they’re scary! How’s that possible? /:-\ (confused guy)
I completely missed this post. I just found the email notice in my junk folder. Crazy! I have to say I like the old Hardy Boys and Nancy Drews a lot better than the new ones too. I just love the cover of this one!
ACK I’m junk folder mail 😉 ! I like the old Hardy Boys better than the new ones (haven’t read any Nancy Drew books yet). I think the new ones are too violent. The cover is cool!
