Quote of the Week and Boys Book Club

22 Apr

First of all…HAPPY EARTH DAY! 😮

Todays quote of the week is from the front of my Harleysville Books t-shirt!

And that’s pretty much how I feel 😉

Talking about Harleysville Books, my boy’s book club met there last Thursday and the book we talked about is Dan Gutman’s “The Genius Files” book 1 – “Mission Unstoppable.”

What happened at the Boys Book Club? Well, here goes:

First, we did this really cool activity packet! It had codes, license plates we could write in, and guess-what-goes-with-what stuff (Pepsi

Pete the Awesome

was good at deciphering codes, and on their cross-country trip they passed tons of license plates on cars, and heard lots of random facts about places they were going to)! Pete our adult coordinator always has the best activities!

Next, we… we… oh yeah! We played a game of Travel Tell-Tale (Tell-Tale is a game where you make a progressive story and Pete said we has to go to a different place everytime it was our turn (like the McDonald twins did on their cross-country trip). It was really fun!

Then, we played a game of Pete Says because everyone loves Pete Says. Well…maybe Pete doesn’t love Pete Says, but we boys do 😉

Last, we left and went home and did stuff. This stuff had nothing to do with Coke and Pepsi. 😮

I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT MONTH! Our book is “Mr. Chickee’s Messy Mission” by Christopher Paul Curtis!

** Now the book review!

The Genius Files Book 1 Mission Unstoppable

By Dan Gutman

Ages 8+ – 304 pages

Published by HarperCollins on January 25, 2011

The brother and sister McDonald twins, Coke and Pepsi, just wanted to walk home from school in peace. Well, you don’t always get what you want! They didn’t want to be followed by two guys in suit and bowler hats, driving a golf cart with poison-dart loaded blow guns. What makes matters worse, is that they have NO IDEA why the golf-cart bowler dudes are trying to get them! Little did they know that they have been labeled as “Geniuses” by a secret government program. When the McDonald family takes off on a cross-country RV trip to their aunts wedding, Coke and Pepsi think they can escape the bad guys after them. They better think again…

I LOVED this book and was happy it was picked as our book of the month for Boys Book Club! It was super fun to read and I really liked Coke (the brother) and Pepsi (the sister) McDonald! You can tell Mr. Gutman has a great sense of humor by the way he writes the book.

Five out of five bookworms for “Mission Unstoppable”!

You can learn more about Mr. Gutman and his other books at his website HERE.

Hi Erik! Happy Earth Day to you too. How fabulous to see this boys’ book club! Wonderful initiative! And the book does sound great, and the activities as well! Would I love to join such a book club (oopsie, wrong gender hehehe). I always enjoy noting your enthusiasm as you review books that you truly like. 🙂 Looking forward to reading more of your adventures. 🙂

Hi Miss Myra! Thank you! The book is awesome! Harleysville Books has other Book Clubs, but there are mostly girls that join, so they created one just for boys. 🙂

love hearing about your book club activities – I’m always trying to encourage my local indie bookstore to start one! This book sounds like it was a lot of fun. Dan Gutman is really funny, and has written so many great books!

Sounds like you guys have a blast with Pete the Awesome! I’ve never heard of Mr. Curtis’ “messy” book. I like him. I’ll look forward to that review.

    • thiskidreviewsbooks April 22, 2012 at 4:55 pm #

We did! Great usage of the name by the way! 😉 I have heard of “Mr. Chickee’s Funny Money”, but not this one. I hope you like the book if you get it!

Like the others I really enjoyed reading about your “Boys Book Club”. what great fun you have with Pete. Look forward to, to reading more reviews. Oh meant to add, Love the names of the kids in this book….lol.

    • thiskidreviewsbooks April 22, 2012 at 4:59 pm #

The names ARE funny! (The McDonald’s knew they were going to have a boy and named him Coke, another name for coal. When Pepsi came, they had to think of a name and a nurse joked and said “Coke and Pepsi” and, well, you can gues what happened next) Glad you like the post!

  12. Darlene April 22, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

Love the quote, pretty much sums it up for me! (but I might have add WRITE) Your boys book club sounds amazing.

  13. Daniel johnston April 22, 2012 at 8:59 pm #

That’s a funny shirt! Your group sounds like a lot of fun also! I participated in a book club when I was in fifth grade a few years ago. It was fun although the time constraints made it difficult to cover much.

Nice review, I have that book sitting on my shelf, though I’ve only read the first few pages. Dan Gutman used to be one of my favorite authors (I’ve mentioned some of his books on my site-his The Kid who Ran for President was I believe his best), but I might have outgrown him. It’s definitely true that he has a great sense of humor!

    • thiskidreviewsbooks April 23, 2012 at 7:14 am #

Thank you Daniel! It is really fun! How can you outgrow DAN GUTMAN?!? I think he is one of the funniest people on Earth… OK… Maybe in a couple of years I won’t 🙂 Thanks for your comment!

  14. Joanna April 23, 2012 at 3:39 am #

Pete certainly does fit in the awesome category. I wish we had had such things as book clubs when I was young, it sounds such fun as well as getting to discuss cool books. I am sure I would love reading about Coke and Pepsi! Hope your Earth Day was fun yesterday?

    • thiskidreviewsbooks April 23, 2012 at 7:15 am #

We did have a nice Earth Day! It rained all day but we needed rain here 🙂 Pete is totally awesome and book club is great!
