Josie and I (and Mary Poppins) Get Creative with Cooking!

For today’s Creative Kids my little sister, Josie and I get creative with cooking!
The title of today’s post was going to be “Yorkshire Pudding is Not Pudding” but I changed it at the last minute 😉

I first heard about Yorkshire Pudding on Catherine Johnson’s blog (click HERE to read the post). When I read about it on Ms. Johnson’s blog, I asked my mom if we could make it and she said “yes” (but then I never got around to it).

I then found a cookbook called “Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book with a Story” and I read it and guess what!?!? It had a recipe for Yorkshire Pudding in it! In fact, the book is pretty cool. It is seven chapters long, one chapter for each day of the week and it talks about the story behind what Mary Poppins makes for the family’s meals each day. Then there are recipes for each of the menus at the end of the book. The illustrations in the book are very nice too and I think it makes a great story book. Josie and I decided to be creative and make a Mary Poppins dinner of our own!

We chose to make Monday’s meal. Here’s is a part from the book –

“What are we cooking today, Mary Poppins? Jane wanted to know.

“Roast Beef,” said Mary Poppins. “And Yorkshire pudding to go with it and just a suspicion of cabbage.”

We also added mashed potatoes and gravy to go with it because Josie wasn’t sure she would,like Yorkshire pudding.

Our mom made the roast beef and mashed potatoes and Josie and I made the Yorkshire pudding and cabbage.

I don’t think our Yorkshire pudding was as fluffy as it should have been.

Well the results are in and our dinner came out great and everyone liked our Yorkshire pudding and cabbage (and mom’s roast beef 😉 )!

Our Dad was confused about the Yorkshire pudding though. He was expecting pudding –

Josie and I thought it was fun to cook a different food! What is your favorite food from a country different from the one you are living in?

Mine is sushi and Josie’s is Mexican food!

  1. What a lovely dinner. It is quite tricky to get the Yorkshire Pudding just right. I hope you enjoyed the final result. People in England eat Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding. mary Poppins was English, so I suppose that is why she liked it so much.

  3. That dinner looks yummy. Mom made some delicious frozen doggie icecream pops for me out of yogurt, babyfood, honey, and peanut butter. They had a MilkBone handle frozen into them. It’s my favorite new treat!

You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that I HAVE that Mary Poppins cook book somewhere – is it old? – you know, like old enough it might have been around in the 70s? 🙂 Glad your dinner turned out well. (And I love the way Mary Poppins says “a suspicion of cabbage” – very funny :))


  5. Erik, what a fun experience for you and Josie! Sounds like the collaboration turned into a fun and interesting dinner. I have only had Yorkshire Pudding once many years ago. It sounds yummy! Great post. And I’m back. Have been off line for a few weeks. Sorry I missed some of your blogs.


  6. My husband is English and he loves Yorkshire pudding. He decided to marry me when he learned that I knew how to make it! I also love cook books and this one looks delightful. Way to go Erik and Josie.

  8. Cool post! One of my favorite books in high school was “All Creatures Great and Small,” by James Herriot. It was about the life of an English country vet in the 1930’s and 40’s, and in it he always mentions the hearty farmers eating “slabs” of Yorkshire pudding smothered in gravy.

    My kids and I have done this a couple times, once after reading the series by Laura Ingalls Wilder (“The Little House Cookbook”) and once after collecting Oregon Trail recipes. It’s a great way to learn!!


  9. I’m so excited you tried the Yorkshire pudding Erik! That’s not bad at all for a first attempt. I think having the oil extremely hot when you pour the batter in is the key to them rising (so my mum says). Even having the oven door open too long while you pour it is no good. It’s an art form I tell you 😉

  11. Yum!!! You are making me hungry. I shouldn’t have read this so close to supper time when I don’t even have time to make roast beef, cabbage and Yorkshire pudding :-0
    It’s great that you and Josie did this….I still remember things I cooked as a kid!
    I have three sisters. We all had our specialties. Mine was Baked Alaska. My older sister’s specialty was chocolate chip cookies. My two younger sister’s made yummy fudge and taffy…yes taffy is extra work because you have to pull it, but it was worth it. None of those things are from a different country, though. We did make stuffed cabbage which is Mediterranean. And we made a Greek cake that had layers of yellow cake with chocolate pudding in between and apricot preserves on top…it was sooooo good.
    Ok…I have to go eat something!!!!!

    • I would like to try Baked Alaska (after I find out what it is! Hopefully not a cooked state… 😉 ) Oooh… Greek cake! Stuffed cabbage! Cookies! Fudge! Taffy! I want to try Greek cake now! And your sisters’ food! And your stuffed cabbage! Can I come to the next family reunion of yours with all of those foods so I can try them? 😉


      • Ok…I went off in search of my recipe! You should see the paper…it almost needs preserving it is so old!!!! This is a long drawn out recipe, but I made a suggestion at the bottom 🙂

        Cake Ingredients:
        5 eggs
        1 cup sugar
        1 teaspoon vanilla
        1 1/4 cup sifted flour
        chocolate custard (recipe follows)
        1 1lb jar of apricot preserves (I used my mom’s homemade preserves….yum!)
        finely shaved Hershey chocolate bar

        Chocolate Custard (make first so it can cool)
        3/4 cup sugar
        2 tablespoons cornstarch
        3 eggs
        1 1/2 cup milk
        1 1oz square unsweetened chocolate (shaved)
        1 teaspoon vanilla
        1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
        Combine sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan. Add eggs and blend well with a fork. Stir in milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick. Remove from heat and stir in shaved chocolate and vanilla. Cover and cool. Cream butter and gradually add to cool chocolate mixture. Blend well. Set aside.

        Cake instructions
        Grease two 9 inch layer pans. Beat eggs until light. Gradually bet in sugar, salt and vanilla. Continue to beat until batter is thick. Carefully fold in flour two tablespoons at a time, mixing until blended after each addition. Pour into pans and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool. Split each layer (so you’ll have 4 thin layers). Put custard between layers and top entire cake with the jar of apricot preserves. Shave Hershey’s bar over preserves. Chill until ready to serve.

        OK….that is an old fashioned recipe done the old fashioned way,but if you want less fuss, I have a suggestion.
        Buy a yellow cake mix and instant chocolate pudding! Use them in place of the made-from-scratch cake and custard, and assemble the same way. I think you will get similar results.

  15. What a yummy post. I have never had Yorkshire Pudding, heard about it, but never tried it….lol. I love sushi and Thai and Asian food. Having traveled around different countries I have many favourities like the tarts and pastries of Austria and France or cheese fondues of Switzerland. I have made Baked Alaska, that is beautiful to and of course our NZ Pavlova! You and Josie are very clever. I must see if I can get this receipe book.
