Perfect Picture Book Friday! World Rat Day: Poems About Real Holidays You’ve Never Heard Of by J. Patrick Lewis

5 Apr

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is National Poetry Month, this is a book full of fun poems and yesterday, April 4th was World Rat Day!

By J. Patrick Lewis

Illustrated by Anna Raff

40 pages – ages 6-8

Published by Candlewick on March 12, 2013

Theme/Topic – Poetry/humor/books for boys

Opening and Synopsis – Taken from the inside jacket –

“No one will ever forget Ewe” on Ohio Sheep Day (July 14). No mata mata how hard we try on World Turtle Day (May 23).

These two holidays are just a taste of the wild and wacky – and real – holidays you should be celebrating.”

Why I liked this book –I first read about this book on Jama Rattigan’s blog (click HERE) and I asked my mom to get it for me because I thought I would really love it… And I DID!!! This was an awesome book! The poems are top-notch, and the illustrations are awesome too! I love everything about it especially that the wacky poems are based on REAL holidays! This is a great way to celebrate National Poetry Month! J. Patrick Lewis is an AWESOME poet! And the fact that he’s Poet Laureate is even better! I also like that the rats show up on all the pages in the book no matter what the holiday is. I think all kids and adults will LOVE this book!

Activities and Resources –

Create your own wacky holiday and write a poem about it!

Here’s my made up holiday –

International Walk Like a Penguin Day

NOTE** After I “made up” this holiday, I googled it and guess what?!? It is a REAL holiday! HA HA! It’s on December 6th.

Waddle waddle,

Here I toddle.

Back and forth, side to side,

Topple forward, now I slide.

Slip, slop,

Belly flop!

Splash! Water! I am in!

Oh dear, I can’t swim…

Very cool Erik! I at first thought eek! when I read rats but they actually look cute. Love the idea of celebrating holidays this way. Loved your poem to, by the way. Great choice for PPBF.

Funny poem. And funny that “Walk Like a Penguin Day” is already a holiday!! My favorite obscure holiday is “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” though I’m pretty bad at it.

Great choice, Erik! I wonder how many people are actually celebrating some of these holidays?! Maybe more now that the book is out…

What a hoot! I liked the video. Who would have thought. I googled National Skunk Day and found out that there is a day June 14. Sounds like a very entertaining book. By the way, sheep are big here and it almost coincides with the Ohio State Fair. Loved your poem.

Another word popped into my mind “umbrella” and I googled it and there is a National Umbrella Day, Feb. 8. This is so much fun. It is endless.

Great review, Erik! So glad you got the book and liked it :). Your penguin poem is just too cool. I didn’t know there was a Walk Like a Penguin Day. 🙂

Great penguin poem and I actually like rats, though they are a little bit too tame here in new York! What a super recommendation, I want this book too!

Nothing like a rat or two, to spark your interest, speak to you, a poem’s line or three or four, and leave you wanting even more…

This is great! Who comes up with this stuff and how does it become official? People are crazy, I think! But we love celebrations at our house and are always looking for good excuses to party so we must check out this book! And that’s a great penguin poem! Thanks for sharing it all!
