Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is National Poetry Month, this is a book full of fun poems and yesterday, April 4th was World Rat Day!

These two holidays are just a taste of the wild and wacky – and real – holidays you should be celebrating.”
Why I liked this book –I first read about this book on Jama Rattigan’s blog (click HERE) and I asked my mom to get it for me because I thought I would really love it… And I DID!!! This was an awesome book! The poems are top-notch, and the illustrations are awesome too! I love everything about it especially that the wacky poems are based on REAL holidays! This is a great way to celebrate National Poetry Month! J. Patrick Lewis is an AWESOME poet! And the fact that he’s Poet Laureate is even better! I also like that the rats show up on all the pages in the book no matter what the holiday is. I think all kids and adults will LOVE this book!
Activities and Resources –
Create your own wacky holiday and write a poem about it!
Here’s my made up holiday –
International Walk Like a Penguin Day
NOTE** After I “made up” this holiday, I googled it and guess what?!? It is a REAL holiday! HA HA! It’s on December 6th.
Here I toddle.
Back and forth, side to side,
Topple forward, now I slide.
Splash! Water! I am in!
Oh dear, I can’t swim…
