12X12 Update!

I am trying to do Julie Hedlund’s 12×12 Challenge again this year. It is a challenge to write 12 picture book drafts in 12 months in 2013. You can click on the 12×12 banner on the right side bar or the one above to learn more about it.

How did I do in August?

I got an ENTIRE draft done and edited it! WOO! I worked on a picture book idea I had during Tara Lazar’s PiBoIdMo last year. It is based on a true story called Don’t Hug a Cactus (let’s just say the “true” part involves my Dad and the Arizona desert 😉 ).

I took Susanna Leonard Hill’s Making Picture Book Magic course in August and I know that is what helped me write a whole book this month. I learned a lot in the class and I found out a lot of why it’s been really hard for me to keep my word count down when trying to write a PB.

The 12×12 challenge is a great challenge. It kind of makes me try to be a better writer. I just try to keep my goals to what I think I can do. Next month I hope to write another draft (maybe try to edit it). If you are doing 12×12 – good luck in September! If you are not, you should join next year! 😀

Don’t Hug a Cactus. I LOVE that title. Sounds like the makings of a great picture book. Congratulations on completing your draft for the month! I admire you for taking Susanna’s class. I have been contemplating taking it. From the sounds of it, it sounds worthwhile.

Thank you Ms. Broas! 🙂 I won the class as a prize for Ms. Hill’s Can’t Sleep Without Sheep video contest. I really enjoyed taking it and I think it helped me figure out how to write better. I liked it so much, I wish I could take it again! 🙂

Congratulations on completing an entire draft. Not easy, especially in the busy summer.

I think it’s amazing you got a draft done with all your work for your book on top of that. You rock, Erik! And a cactus story sounds fun.

Ms. HIll’s class really helped me with the draft. I don’t think I would have gotten it done if I didn’t take it. 🙂

Having goals like this (and sticking to them) will make your writing better and better, not to mention additional instruction like Suzanna’s writing course. Way to go, Erik!

Yeah, sometimes it is hard to stick to my goals. I have to try to remember not to try to do too much. Ms. Hill’s class was a good thing to keep me going. It really helped with writing the PB draft. 🙂

Erik, I am so envious that you were able to take Susanna’s class. She’s critiqued a manuscript of mine before, and from that experience, I am sure she is a fabulous instructor. Big congrats to you for finishing a draft!

The class was great Ms. Larson! I won it for winning Ms. Hill’s Can’t Sleep Without Sheep video contest. It was a lot of work, but I really learned what I was doing wrong when trying to write PB drafts. Thank you Ms. Larson!
