What do you get when you mix Jon Scieszka, Rick Riordan , Tom Angleberger and 8 other great authors together?
A GREAT collection of weird and fantastic sci-fi stories!
Guys Read: Other Worlds edited by Jon Scieszka
352 pages – ages 8+
Book 4 in the Guys Read series
Published by Walden Pond Press on September 17, 2013
Summary- Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on another planet, be attacked by alien warlords, or even be taken over by evil robo-shoes? This is the book for you! The Guys Read series have collections of short stories by different authors. In this book all of the stories are Sci-Fi (one of my favorite genres). There are ten stories in all and the authors are –
Tom Angleberger
Ray Bradbury
Shannon Hale
D.J. MacHale
Eric Nylund
Kenneth Oppel
Rick Riordan
Neal Shusterman
Rebecca Stead
Shaun Tan
with illustrations by Greg Ruth
Opinion- The stories in the collection are all written in different styles (which I thought made it really cool). Rick Riordan wrote a new Percy Jackson short story for the book (very cool). I particularly loved Bouncing the Grinning Goat by Shannon Hale because it had a medieval feel to it with swords and mystical powers. There is even one story by Shaun Tan that is completely graphic and pretty cool. I was introduced to some really great authors that I didn’t know before (Ray Bradbury, Rebecca Stead) that I am planning to read more of their books. Of course, I loved Tom Angleberger’s “Rise of the RoboShoes” and Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo.” Both were funny and were the great stories I expect out of two of my favorite authors. Because they Guys Read series is a bunch of short stories, they are great to read when you don’t have a lot of time or for kids who are reluctant readers. I think boys will love this book, although I know a lot of girls who are into Sci-Fi too!

I highly recommend this series to kids! The other books are great as well. (See my review of Guys Read Thriller HERE).

The title caught my attentions, especially given recent concern expressed about boys and men not reading as much these days. It’s good know this is out there as something that can be a sort of “brick hint” that that guys do read and that these stories would be ones guys could enjoy.
I think the series is a great idea! The short stories are a good idea for reluctant readers too. Thank you Ms. Brown!
That Mr Scieszka seems to be everywhere lately! Doing good things! This looks like a whopping good idea. I’ll have to check these out. They look like something my library needs to have for sure. Thanks!
The whole series is really good for reluctant readers and even though it is meant for boys, I bet a lot of girls will like them!
Super find, Erik!
Thank you Ms. Johnson!
When is the “Dogs Read” series coming out? I’m dying to learn to read!
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Ha Ha . . . . . . . 😆
Ha Ha Ha Ha!!! You are the best Cupcake!
Anything with Scieszka in it is a book I’ll like. And I do like Science Fiction. I read Enders Game way before it was cool. And how do you like the way Orson Scott Card invented the iPad way before Apple did?
I also like Ray Radbury and his books”Martian Chronicles and “Fahrenheit 451” I read both in high school. Millions of years ago. 🙂
I need to read more Ray Bradbury! A lot of people have been saying how great he is. I think it is cool that a lot of technology was thought up by authors way before it was invented! 🙂
Yes, It makes me think we need to do more reading, dont’ you? 🙂
Yes! 😀
I can imagine how much you love this, Erik! Sci-Fi? Oh I bet you devoured it. Great review.
Thank you Dr. Clune!
I’ve been prach9ing that boys need more books for three years. And these books have got to be good! With all those fantastical authors contributing? WOWOWOW!!!! I will have to have this in our library. Thanks for sharing. You rock!
Guys Read is MAGNIFUL and FANTASTICAL! AND YOU ROCK Ms. Campbell! 😀
Er, preaching. I NEED A COPY EDITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉
hee hee
Wow, Erik, what a line-up of authors! I can’t imagine how this COULDN’T be good! 🙂 Thanks for posting it!
Just checked! There’s also THIS one edited by Jon:
Guys Write for Guys Read
Thought you might want to check that one out, too, Erik 🙂
I will check it out! Thank you!
I think it is going to be AWESOME! 😀
What an amazing set of books. I like short stories and sometimes wished they were more the rage. I am not much into sci-fi, but Bouncing the Grinning Goat sounds terrific. What could a goat be bouncing about and why would it grin? The Funny Business and the Sports Page sound like something I would enjoy. Interesting find, Erik. 🙂
I really like short stories. I thin there should be more books like this. Yeah, the title of Bouncing the Grinning Goat is awesome (the story is too)!
I think this is a great idea for a book — especially one that encourages boys to read. I was surprised to see Shannon Hale.
Shannon Hale wrote my favorite story in the book! It is called Bouncing the Grinning Goat. I have not read any of her other books -do you like any?
Some big names in there! This year M-man is getting so he can read at a level nearer to his interests. Short stories are great for him, too. Easier to conquer. We’ll check this out!
They Guys Reads series are great because they are all short stories. I hope M-Man like it!
ERIK! You should start reading Ray Bradbury. Seriously. Start with “Something Wicked this way comes” or perhaps “Dandelion Wine.” Jon Scieszka is amazing. I hope to collect all the Guys Read series soon. I believe I only have one: Guys Write or something like that. This is wonderful. 🙂
My mom said I should read his stuff too. Ray Bradbury is now going on my TBR list! 😀
I have the Guys Read: Funny Business- but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet. After reading this review I will start it soon. Especially since I don’t have to read the whole thing at once- I can read a few stories at a time. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Guys Read: Funny Business was really good too! I thought Other Worlds was even better! I like books of short stories. They can be very fun to read! 🙂
