I’m BACK! Helloooo 2014!

I’ve missed everyone!

I’m back from my blogging break and ready to go! Tomorrow I will get back to reviewing books. I’ve read some great ones over my break and can’t wait to tell you about them!

But Β first – some silliness!

einstein

I am pointing at a sign that says Pi = 3.14 = Pizza Pie = yum.

The picture is for Mrs. RoZo (Julie Rowan-Zoch at julierowanzoch.wordpress.com). When I told her I had an Einstein wig, she wanted pictures. I thought I lost the mustache, but then found it with the lab coat. I tried to smile but every time I did, the mustache fell off! πŸ˜‰

How was your holiday break?

I had a great time (even though my parents made me stay off the computer for about a whole week, but I had lots of fun anyway πŸ˜‰ ). I got some great things for Christmas: A wonderful mug with two of my favorite things (besides raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles, warm woolen mittens, and brown paper packages tied up with string) on it – Doctor Who (the person who said the quote) and books (the subject of said quote):

mug

So true, Doctor, so true.

A cool light switch cover! It totally shows my geekiness, but WHO CARES??? It’s my room after all! πŸ™‚

switch

Hey, I just noticed… If you choose the Dark Side of the Force, you save electricity… Hmm…

I really love this home-made Snowglobe Josie made for me. She used Legos, some glitter and a mason jar. Isn’t it great?!?

snow

It’s a Capture the Flag scene… That never ends. πŸ˜‰

And I really love my bookshelves. My dad and I built them over Christmas break. Β I filled them up on the Β day we got them done. πŸ™‚ Now my bedroom feels like home! πŸ™‚

library

Notice the stunning hat – it was a present too! πŸ™‚

I am wearing a very cool t-shirt I got for my birthday –

shirt

I made Josie some really cool home-made fairy wings for a Christmas present. Here she is, modeling them. πŸ™‚

fairy1

Notice the beautiful artwork. πŸ˜‰

fairy2

The Gathering Books Blog had a feature about Fairies a while back and Fats Suela posted the instructions for making the fairy wings. When I saw it, I knew I wanted to make them for Josie. I was happy Josie liked them so much. πŸ™‚ I told Ms. Suela I’d post pictures of them when Josie opened them… so here they are! You can see the post that has the video on how to make them HERE.

One really cool thing our family did for the season is that my family helped out at Toys for Tots in our county. I never knew what happened to all the toys that get donated and now I do. We helped a great Marine named George who danced with the Princess of Denmark when he was stationed there (George had a ton of great stories). George had to fill orders for 600 kids from our county and he needed a lot of help. I couldn’t believe how much work there was to do. Our job was to get a description of a kid (like boy – 8 years old – likes Star Wars and comics) and try to match toys to the kid. The room we were in had toys all over and we had to search through everything to find things that we thought the kids would like. I tried to do the best I could. I was kind of sad because so many kids were asking for bikes and George literally had one bike in his donation pile. It made me think how lucky I am to have a bike. Mostly we were able to get the things kids asked for and that made me feel great. We helped George out for 2 nights (about 5 hours each night). It was hard work, but I hope we get to do it next year too.

I didn’t make any “resolutions.” Did you?

Check out my Books I read HERE. I started counting them March 7, 2013. I ended up with 276 books in 2013. I have 6 read for January 2014 so far.

How have you been? πŸ™‚

Welcome back, Erik! I’m so glad you had a fantastic vacation — we missed you, though! Great gifts. Absolutely fabulous. And those bookshelves! I’m looking forward to your reviews. (Wow, you read a lot. I knew that already, but seeing the number of books — wow.)

Welcome back, E. I think you look like a total hipster in the hat. It’s awesome. I’m working on a LEGO house for next Christmas. Nah. I’m lying again. We don’t even have any LEGOs around here. I LOVE the LEGO snow globe that Josie made.

    Love and licks,

Yay, you are back! Sounds like a fantastic break. I love the gifts you received especially that snow globe and the homemade bookshelves! Those are some nice fairy wings you made Josie, too! I may have to borrow your parents idea to help with Toys for Tots, next year. That sounds wonderful all around. Happy 2014 to you and your entire family!

Welcome back! Pretty awesome slew of presents you got there. I love the bookshelves. I can’t wait to get out of apartment living and into a house so I can do something very similar. Between all my LEGO sets and the books my wife and I have, we’re going to need some epic shelving. Congrats on reading an almost insurmountable number of books. You seriously are inspirational, especially to teachers like me.

Thank you Mr. Phelps! πŸ˜€ We are going to build a LEGO Table (covered in those big, gray LEGO platforms) for me. It used to be a Thomas the Train train table. πŸ™‚ Then we will make a smaller one for my little sister. πŸ™‚

That’s awesome. Pretty much what I plan on doing sometime in the future when we move into a house. I’m going to build a wooden table, though I probably won’t cover it with the plates because my dream is to build a town using the modular buildings I’ve been collecting, so I’ll probably cover it (not permanently) with street plates, and green ones for grass and yards, etc. Take pics I’d love to see it when it’s done and ready for building!

The town idea is cool! I will post pictures when I am done. I have to save up to buy 2 more base plates, then I will have enough to cover the top. I am working on painting the wooden base and my dad has to help me fix a broken support. Hmm I should take pictures as the project goes… πŸ™‚

Erik, can we trade Christmas presents? I can offer you a really nice purse for the Luke/Vadar switch and Dr. Who mug. We had some lovely friends from Australia (and their 10 and 13-year-old kids) visit us over Christmas, and we had a blast taking them around Los Angeles and San Diego. Happy New Year!

Welcome back, Erik! That Einstein costume is epic. So many awesome gifts indeed. I like all of it, the bookshelf, especially! Thank you for sharing pics of Josie with the wings. She looks fabulous with it! Glad to know that you helped Toys for Tots. Giving back to the community always gives a sense of fulfillment. January is moving too fast, it seems. But the reading life has been great. I pledged 150 books to read this year on Goodreads, and I’ve already read 4 books. We have posted about our new reading challenge this year, a flexible, read-all-you-want kind of thing. Anyway, keep doing what you do best, Erik. Continue to be an inspiration to others, especially to the young ones. Happy New Year! =)

Thanks Ms. Suela! Josie loved the wings. I had fun making them (except I got glitter all over my parents bed and now it’s all over the floor and it pretty much sticks to everything…. πŸ™‚ ). I’m glad you like Einstein! πŸ˜‰ I’m glad Dr. Bacsal suggested to keep track of the books I read. I guess I never realized how many I actually read either! πŸ™‚ Happy 2014!

What a fun post! Love that you guys made homemade gifts for each other. And it’s so cool that you gave back to the community. Each Christmas, we give a “birthday present to Jesus.” This year my kids raised nearly 50 dollars, which I matched, and we donated it to the ARK encounter at Answers in Genesis. (http://arkencounter.com/) Very cool!

Glad you are back. I hope eleven-year-old Eric holds on to his memories of 2013. I love those bookshelves. One thing I am anxious to do this year – once I get house – is to have bookshelves like yours. REviewers need those kind. The number of books you read is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! (Sound of Music is one of my favorite Christmas movies). πŸ˜€

I do not know what I would do if I took one week away from the computer. But it is not surprising you have great fun. Well, what books will you be bringing to your site this year?
Any I might know? Hm. You may have won last year, but mister you are going down this year. πŸ˜†

Okay – the race is ON! πŸ™‚
When we moved to where we are now, the one thing I wanted in my room was bookshelves. My dad helped me build them. It took a couple weeks (and a lot of sanding) but I am really happy about them.
It was hard not even checking my emails for a week, but it was also nice not having to think about it too. πŸ™‚
      I am glad I’m back! πŸ˜€

I loved reading how you helpd out at Toys for Tots. So worthwhile, Erik! We work with OCC. Shoeboxes that go overseas. But I would love to volunteer for the kids over here too. There might be a place in Charlotte. I’ll check. Cause Toys for Tots are so cool! I feel bad about the ONLY one bike problem too. I guess I know what to donate next year. As many bikes as I can afford.

Great books alive! You read waaay more than I did. πŸ™‚ I missed you, Erik! Good to see you back. *waving*

Hi Ms. Campbell! *waving* right back at you! We did the shoebox overseas a couple years ago. We also sent a bunch of stuff to my Aunts brother (who was in Afghanistan) and asked him to share it with his unit because he told us that a lot of the guys don’t get anything from home.
Josie and I are going to save this year to get a bike to donate to Toys for Tots next year. I hope we get to help George again.
