Perfect Picture Book Friday! The Very Hungry Caterpillar 45th Anniversary!

7 Mar

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because I think the 45th anniversary of this book is a good occasion to remember what a great picture book it is!

Hey I get to do an AWESOME give-away too!!! Read to the bottom! 🙂

TheVeryHungryCaterpillarThe Very Hungry Caterpillar

by Eric Carle

13 Pages – ages 1+

Published by Philomel (Penguin Group) on March 23, 1994

Theme/Topic- Nature/Caterpillars

Genre- Realistic Fiction

Opening and Synopsis-

“In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf.”

Watch out – when that egg hatches there’s going to be a VERY hungry caterpillar! 🙂

Why I liked this book-

Who doesn’t love this book?!? I will never get tired of reading about the caterpillar eating and eating his way through the book. 🙂

Mr Carle’s artwork is incredible too.

Here’s what the publisher has to say about The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 45th Anniversary –

“Since its publication in 1969, 36 million copies of the book have sold worldwide and it has been published in 55 languages. That year the book was also named one of the best children’s books of the year by The New York Times, and it has since become a beloved, must-own classic. Today, every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold.”

WOAH! A book every 30 seconds!

Activities and Resources-

Loni Edwards nominated The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a PPBF book a few years ago. Check her post out HERE.

Let’s celebrate the day with Eric Carle!

“Eric Carle ( is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. He has illustrated more than seventy books, many best sellers, and more than 100 million copies of his books have sold around the world. You can hop on over to the official party page HERE and join in the fun. There are a ton of activities and games and a video greeting from Mr. Carle himself!

    Love and licks,

  11. julie rowan zoch March 7, 2014 at 12:52 pm #

Yeah, like, I wanna win too! Did you know Carle’s original proposal for this book was for a worm?

  12. Laura Anne Miller March 7, 2014 at 1:14 pm #

Wow! Another giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity, Erik. We love Eric Carle books at our house. We have Brown Bear, Polar Bear, the Lamb and the Butterfly, Kangaroo…but I was horrified to realize we don’t own The Hungry Caterpillar. *Gasp* That will have to be rectified. I also own the art of Eric Carle’s and a video I used to show to my classes when we did collage. His website is so awesome and fun too.

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 7, 2014 at 7:39 pm #

Mr. Carle’s books are all great but you REALLY need to have this book in your house! Well -you’re in for the contest, maybe you’ll win a copy! 🙂

  13. LovableLobo March 7, 2014 at 1:38 pm #

It’s hard to believe that this lil’ caterpillar munched its way into our lives 45 years ago. Such a classic! Great post SuperKid Erik! Keeping my paws crossed in hopes of winning!

  14. readingwithrhythm March 7, 2014 at 1:48 pm #

Wow! 45 years! That’s older than me, I think. When I was a wee pup, like the Godzilla pup is now, I am told that I ate my way through a Hungry Caterpillar book – just like the Caterpillar! i don’t remember that at all. Good choice for PPBF. If there was ever a Perfect Picture Book for real – this is it!!

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 7, 2014 at 7:43 pm #

Well – that’s really getting into your reading or UMM eating! 🙂 Hide your books from Electra – Rhythm!

  15. stanleyandkatrina March 7, 2014 at 2:24 pm #

45 years? Really? I did not think the book was older than me! This is a favorite in our home. I’m sure Neighbor Girl has it memorized from the countless readings of it in her younger years. We love Eric Carle and would love those tote bags! Thanks for the giveaway.

  16. Joanne Roberts March 7, 2014 at 3:27 pm #

Thanks for letting us know, Eric. I’m happy to share the news and celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar along with you all. 45 is a great number! The Tiny Seed is another of my favorite Eric Carle books.

  17. Daniel Johnston March 7, 2014 at 4:48 pm #

I love this book. That sounds really cool that he has a museum, too! Maybe I’ll have to check it out some time 🙂

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 7, 2014 at 7:51 pm #

I’d love to go to the museum some day! Isn’t it funny how a little kid’s book could still be so great to us? 🙂

  18. mlreads March 7, 2014 at 4:54 pm #

The classic story time book. I’m reading it again next week.

  19. Ana Crespo March 7, 2014 at 5:26 pm #

Love the book and am crossing my fingers to win the giveaway. I hardly ever win anything!!!

  20. Joanna March 7, 2014 at 5:35 pm #

Thanks for letting us know this birthday, Erik. This HAD to be added to PPBF!

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 7, 2014 at 7:54 pm #

I couldn’t believe the book is 45 years old! Loni Edwards did add it to the PPBF list back in 2012 (I have a link to it in my post) but since Ms. Hill said we could re-nominate some books, I figured that because of the anniversary, I should mention it again. 🙂

  21. Michelle Isenhoff March 7, 2014 at 6:51 pm #

This was the ultimate favorite at our house…for all three kids!!

  22. patientdreamer March 7, 2014 at 6:59 pm #

Ooh yes, I know this one. Seen and read it a few times… Hmm didn’t realise it wasn’t on the PPBF list. Good for you!

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 7, 2014 at 7:57 pm #

It seems like everyone has read this one! 🙂 Loni Edwards did add it to the PPBF list back in 2012 (I have a link to it in my post) but since Ms. Hill said we could re-nominate some books, I figured that because of the 45th anniversary, I should mention it again. Plus I have to cool give away!

  23. Prairie Garden Girl March 7, 2014 at 8:08 pm #

  30. Crystal March 16, 2014 at 8:18 pm #

My three boys and I love this story! The illustrations and holes in the book are so engaging to them.

  31. Myra GB March 17, 2014 at 7:44 pm #

The giveaway looks gorgeous! Eric Carle is plain brilliant, and so prolific too. I doubt if I’ve read even half of his works. I should really study them more thoroughly. He has indeed introduced the concept of graphic design and the minimalist layout to picturebooks, raising the bar altogether. 🙂

    • thiskidreviewsbooks March 19, 2014 at 8:20 pm #

I hope to one day be able to say, truthfully, that I’ve read all of Mr. Carle’s works. 🙂
