Perfect Picture Book Friday! Lazy Dave by Jarvis

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a sweet book with a good amount of humor.

32 pages – ages 5+

Theme- More than meets the eye/loving for who you are.

Genre- Fiction

Opening and Synopsis- Opening Lines: “This is Dave. Like most dogs, Dave loved to sleep.”

Synopsis from GoodReads: “Dave is a dog. Dave is a dog who loves to sleep all day long. Lilly thinks Dave is the laziest dog in the world! But maybe Dave isn’t as lazy as Lilly thinks. . . .

What I Thought- I liked the humor of this book. Lazy Dave appears to be a very lethargic dog (like my Basset Hound, Clyde) that seems to sleep all day. I thought that was funny all of the things that Dave did while he was sleepwalking. Mr. Jarvis’ illustrations go perfectly with the story, and everything fits together perfectly. Dave looks a lot like my dog, just different colors. In fact, I bet something in Dave would remind almost every kid of their dog. I really enjoyed this book, and it’s incredibly sophisticated humor.

Activities and Resources- If you have a pet, imagine what they would do if they could get out into the world while you’re at school. Write a story or draw a picture of what they do when you aren’t around.

Say that you’re one of the reporters in Dave’s town. You need to write an article about the mystery heroic dog (Dave does some heroic things whilst sleepwalking)! What would you put into it? What would the headline be?

Love the hairs on Dave’s back. The humor sounds great for kids and adults!

This sounds like a very funny book. And having a lazy dog of my own, I’m partial to stories about other lazy dogs. Great review, Erik!

What a fun story! I think most of us wonder what our dogs do when we’re gone. I even wonder what my dog is dreaming because he makes sounds like he’s chasing something.

I know exactly what you mean! Clyde does some bark/huffing noise sometimes (but he normally snores…)

Speaking of lazy dogs…my dog is snoring away on the window seat, twitching in his sleep, dreaming, no doubt, about eating–his other favorite past time. I think I better head to the library for this book.

You got a basset hound? I love those floppy, droopy guys. If I ever become a 19th century detective, I am definitely getting one.

Sounds superfun, Erik. There’s a movie coming out on a similar subject.

IF there’s a dog story, I want to read it! Yup, I’m a sucker for them. Thanks for pointing this one out, Erik.

Yay! Another dog story. This one sounds quite a character. I love animal stories so this one is right up my street. We used to have a cavalier king Charles spaniel. He was a cutie and knew it. Thanks for sharing.
