Perfect Picture Book Friday! AMAZED by Aleksandra Artymowska

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is just really cool!

AMAZED
By Aleksandra Artymowska
40 pages – ages 5+

Published by Laurence King on September 5, 2017

Theme/Topic- Maze/Puzzle
Genre- Fiction
Opening and Synopsis- Opening: “[wordless]

Synopsis from Publisher: “Can you help the boy find his way through the mazes and back to his friends? Navigate towering treetops, prickly cactus fields, mysterious caverns, and crumbling statues in your epic quest.”

What I Thought- This book is absolutely breathtaking. The illustrations are simple, with lots of repeating/similar elements, but that is part of what makes the mazes challenging

It took me a bit to figure some of them out. I think that’s mostly because I kept looking at the illustrations and all the details and then I’d forget where I was. It kind of made the book feel like a road trip where you really want to look at the scenery! It’s nice to see a book that is challenging but then also a joy to look at. There are answers in the back in case if you really get stuck. It is a silent or wordless picture book. I have an affinity for those especially when done very well. It’s a really nice picture book!

Activities and Resources- Thebalance.com has great free mazes HERE.

It would be really nice to make up your own story to go along with the boy’s travels through the maze. Where is the boy? Why does he want to go through the maze? Why does the maze look like it does? What does he find in the maze? The possibilities are endless!

  1. This does look interesting. It took me a while to warm up to wordless PBs. It didn’t take long to realize the value of children telling their own versions of the story with great imagination!
