Perfect Picture Book Friday! I am a Duck by Eve Bunting

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a charming book about overcoming one’s fears.

I’m a Duck
by Eve Bunting
Illustrated by Will Hillenbrand
32 pages – ages 3-7
Will be published by Candlewick Press on March 13, 2018

Theme/Topic- Fears
Genre- Fiction
Opening and Synopsis- Opening: “When I was an egg, I’m told, I left my nest and rolled and rolled.”

Synopsis from Publisher:

“I cannot swim, and that is bad.
A landlocked duck is very sad.

One day, an egg rolled out of a nest and right into a deep pond. Now that egg is a little duck, and the water is still very scary. Jumping into the pond at all seems impossible, never mind swimming in a line with all his brothers. “You’re a duck, and ducks don’t sink,” Big Frog points out. Practicing in a puddle helps a little, while backrubs and snacks from his mother help a little more. Big Frog offers to hold his friend’s wing and dive in together, but our little duck knows that some challenges need to be faced alone. Even when they are very scary! Sometimes it takes a lot to get your webbed feet wet! An adorable picture book makes a splash with a satisfying story about conquering your fears. “

What I Thought- This is a great book about overcoming your fears after having a bad experience. Bunting’s sing song words coupled with Hillenbrand’s tranquil illustrations make a perfect match.

The story captures the fear felt after a bad experience in a way kids can understand. It also shows how we can encourage others to overcome fears without forcing them to do anything. I love that the duck gets support from his mom, brothers, a frog and an owl. It shows that a whole community can encourage someone. Bunting’s rhyme is perfect in every way. As a reviewer, it was a joy to read.

Overall this is a very sweet book that will become a lasting favorite.

Activities and Resources- There is a giveaway for this book going on at Goodreads – click HERE to enter – it ends on March 13th, 2018

Kids Health has an interesting article about fears and phobias in children and what to do about them.

PBS has a great activity where you talk about what you were afraid of as a kid and ask the children’s advice on how you could overcome it. Also it has a role-play activity where you introduce a stuffed animal and ask the group what the stuffed animal could be afraid of and how it can overcome it. Click HERE to go to the activity.
