Opening and Synopsis- Opening Lines:

“Penelope Rex was nervous. It’s not every day a little T. rex starts school.

Synopsis from Publisher: “It’s the first day of school for Penelope Rex, and she can’t wait to meet her classmates. But it’s hard to make human friends when they’re so darn delicious! That is, until Penelope gets a taste of her own medicine and finds she may not be at the top of the food chain after all. . . .“

What I Thought- I am a huge fan of Higgins’ work (ie, Mother Bruce), and this book does not disappoint whatsoever. While it’s a little hard to find a directly applicable message, the book is still a good, funny way of broaching conversations about the start of school and the behaviors acceptable there. Hopefully, your kids don’t want to eat their classmates after reading this book, but maybe they can use the book to see how they can be a better friend (ie, how certain behaviors are off-putting). Higgins’ illustration style is bright and full of humor, sometimes including some funny little details in the background. Kids will get a kick out of seeing adorable Penelope as she learns to be a good friend with her classmates, even if she sometimes wants to eat them. I highly recommend this fun picture book!

Activities and Resources- There is a great list of ideas to teach kids good behavior without giving gifts or prizes to them, which can be found at Weareteachers.com, HERE.

  1. Love it. Mom read it and laughed her head off. FYI – I was also not allowed to eat my classmates when I went to obedience school.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  2. Thanks. Looks like a unique, fun & educational book!
