Everyone’s favorite curmudgeonly bear is back, and this time he and his goslings are gearing up for Christmas!
Bruce is a lot of things. He is a bear. He is a grump. He is a pretty decent cook. And he is a mother. One thing Bruce is not? Santa Claus. But that doesn’t stop the whole forest from lining up to give him their Christmas wishes when he becomes the victim of mistaken identity—again. Kids will howl with laughter as award-winning author-illustrator Ryan T. Higgins delivers another hilarious story about this bear who just can’t catch a break.
What I Thought:
Higgins has captured the magic he created in the original Mother Bruce story. This Christmas story finds all the heart in the big lovable grump Bruce. How could the forests’ animals not mistake the big burly bear in his knit cap and long-johns for a jolly old elf?
Bruce tries to convince the “kids” that he is not Santa and let them know he does not like Holidays, or cheer, or fun in anyway – but it doesn’t work.
Soon Bruce is engulfed with woodland youth wanting to tell him what they want for Christmas and parents grateful that Bruce is portraying Santa to spread holiday cheer. Bruce really did not intend on this, he wants to eat and sleep. I really love Higgins’ illustrations. He captures Bruce’s curmudgeonly attitude and his “kids” (the geese and mice) innocence. It is hysterical how Bruce’s predicament escalates and snowballs out of control! The story is sweet, heartwarming, and everything you want in a Christmas story.
Five of five bookworms for Santa Bruce!
