Review! La Frontera: El viaje con papá ~ My Journey with Papa by Deborah Mills and Alfredo Alva #ReadYourWorld

Welcome to Multicultural Children’s Book Day!

I am proud to say I have been participating in this event for all six years it has been going on!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

La Frontera: El viaje con papá ~ My Journey with Papa

by Deborah Mills and Alfredo Alva

Illustrated by Claudia Navarro

48 pages – ages 4+
Published by Barefoot Books on May 1, 2018

Publisher’s Synopsis: Join a young boy and his father on a daring journey from Mexico to Texas to find a new life. They’ll need all the resilience and courage they can muster to safely cross the border ? la frontera ? and to make a home for themselves in a new land.

What I Thought- I love that this book is a true story, told by Alva with the help of Mills. The book is written in English and Spanish. These types of bilingual books, with the words side-by-side, make it a wonderful opportunity for kids to start to pick up second languages.  The story is told simply, with Alva narrating it from the point of view that he saw as a young child. It seems so innocent, but you realize this is a true story of a father and son leaving their family to cross from Mexico to the USA in search of amnesty and a new life. It is really a powerful story. Navarro’s illustrations portray a folk art setting that captures the spirit of the story perfectly. They truly are beautiful, with bright colors and big scenes. There is an excellent section in the back of the book with real photographs, a map, information about immigration, and more about Alva and his family. I wholeheartedly recommend this true story to kids, as it will hopefully enlarge their worldview.
