The Amazing Numbers in Animal Lives by Lola M. Schaefer – Our Review

How cool is it to put math and nature together into a picture book? Ms. Schaefer wrote a book that young kids will love because of the pictures and simple text (and also the counting part – I actually tried to count the 1,000 seahorse babies… Don’t try it…) and older kids will love it because of the facts about the animals and all the information about how Ms. Schaefer used math and averages to write the book.

The back pages were all the math is explained is really well done. It shows kids how cool math can be in real life. I really like the illustrations. They are realistic and have a natural feel to them, with a touch on fantasy.

I like Mr. Neal’s artwork. I just figured out he did the cover of “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson (awesome book) and I love that cover. I would love to see more nonfiction PB done as well as this one.

I give this book 5 out of 5 bookworms!fivebooks

Genevieve Petrillo September 6, 2013 at 11:01 am #Mom and I don’t get math very much. She wishes there was a book like this when she was little. Maybe she would have cared about numbers more. Sometimes she says, “Why do I have to say your name a hundred times before you listen?” I think it’s more like a thousand times….

I love the nonfiction one, picture book or higher, that use humour and great illustrations when explaining their subject. Yes, we need to review more good and great non fiction books! Great review, Erik.
